Srebrna Góra Fortress
Europe's largest mountain fortification
Srebrna Góra Fortress towers over the town and is one of the most important places to visit in Lower Silesia. It's an extensive complex of forts, bastions and fortifications, with a massive Donjon at its centre.
The fortress was built between 1765 and 1777 on the strategic Srebrna Pass. It was designed to protect Silesia and be prepared for a long siege. To this day its scale is impressive, especially when you look at the walls and forts spread over the hills above Srebrna Góra.
History embedded in Srebrna Góra
For many years, the Fortress set the rhythm of the entire town. The garrison provided employment, and the life of Srebrna Góra was tied to the military, the forts and movement around Srebrna Pass.
In 1807, the fortress was attacked by the French army. Later it gradually lost its military importance, until in 1867 the military finally abandoned it. Over time it began to attract tourists, and today it's one of the most important monuments in Lower Silesia.
The Fortress influenced the life of the entire Srebrna Góra for years. Another chapter of this local history can be found in the history of Villa Stara Apteka.
